The EU Green Transition & Climate Legal Ecosystem — Map
A layered map of the instruments in this area and how they stack.
The EU green transition & climate legal ecosystem
Work in progress. This area of the knowledge base is a structured stub: the instrument list and key dates below are drawn from primary sources, but the deep dives are still being written. Anything marked ⚠️ VERIFY has not been independently confirmed.
The European Green Deal translates into law through a target-setting framework and the instruments that implement it:
| Layer | Question it answers | Main instruments |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Targets | What must the EU achieve, by when? | European Climate Law (net zero 2050, −55% by 2030) |
| 2. Carbon pricing & borders | Who pays for emissions, including at the border? | EU ETS ⚠️ VERIFY — not yet covered, CBAM |
| 3. Corporate transparency | What must companies disclose about sustainability? | CSRD (with ESRS standards) |
| 4. Adjacent | Energy, product and finance layers | Fit-for-55 package ⚠️ VERIFY, SFDR / Taxonomy ⚠️ VERIFY — not yet covered |
Where to start
- European Climate Law — the binding target architecture everything else implements.
- CBAM — the carbon border adjustment; definitive regime from 2026.
- CSRD — sustainability reporting; note the 2025 “omnibus” simplification changed scope and timing ⚠️ VERIFY current state.
